Wattpad 101 – How long should a chapter be?

I’m just trying to come to grips with how things work on Wattpad. I’ve never used Wattpad before so I’m trying to familiarise myself with the site before I go throwing my words around the Wattpad community.

Have any of my readers or followers used Wattpad before? If so, do you have any advice for a newbie? I don’t want to screw up even though I know that the only way to learn is to try it out for myself. I just don’t like feeling unprepared. It makes it that much harder to just write, you know?

I am looking at my star wars fanfic and I am thinking the way I have formatted it is just not going to work for Wattpad. The journal entries are far too short and I can’t call them chapters with less than 500 words. Most of the forum posts I’ve read say a chapter should be at least between 500 – 800 words and then others say it should be however long you want it to be. I dunno about that. I doubt my format would work well, I just get the feeling that if I want this story to be read, I have to flesh out the journal entries as full-blown chapters.

I’ve got some serious writing to do… I really want to be able to do this.

  1. I have never used Wattpad, so my advice is probably not valid haha. I actually use WordPress for all my writing. I think word-count is totally a writer’s preference thing. Most of what I post is between 2,000-2,500 words, and that has been working for me, although it’s definitely on the long side. I think journal entries would definitely be suited to a lower word count. And I do think that shorter chapters are more readable, especially for people who come online to read stories.

    1. Thanks so much! Yes, I agree with you regarding online reading. I think for any writer it’s a challenge to capture an audience, especially now that people have much shorter attention spans. Journal entries should definitely be shorter, I think I might aim for 500 -800 words and see how that works πŸ™‚ Thank you again for your input, much appreciated πŸ˜€
