Solo: A Star Wars Story

No matter how hard I try, I can’t do more than merely accept that Solo: A Star Wars Story is part of the Star Wars movie franchise and also canon. I didn’t really feel anything when they announced it would be released (unlike many other Star Wars fans who condemned it from day one) and when I finally got to see it, I was surprised at my indifference towards it. I actually thought I would hate it.

If I had to choose one scene in the film that I actually enjoyed, I’d say it’s a tie between Darth Maul’s presence and Enfys Nest’s introduction. Enfys Nest was badass, not gonna lie. Her character was on the hype train right from the beginning and as soon as it was revealed that she was also female, I actually had a lot more hope that it wouldn’t suck than I previously did.

In box office terms, it was a flop, right?

Box Office Budget:

$300,000,000 (estimated)

Opening Weekend USA:

$84,420,489, 27 May 2018, Wide Release

Gross USA:

$213,767,512, 20 September 2018

Cumulative Worldwide Gross:

$392,074,197, 16 August 2018

What’s that you say? I’m badass?!

In all honesty, as a fan, I couldn’t care less about how well the movie did at the box office. I mean it has no impact on me whatsoever if it’s complete and utter crap. Turns out it barely recovered the cost of making it so I’d say commercially, that’s bad for the Star Wars franchise. But it’s Star Wars, and as a fan, that’s supposed to mean something to me. But it doesn’t. I was never fully invested in Han Solo even when I was first introduced to Star Wars. I mean sure, he was cool and charismatic, but Luke was my guy. Somehow when I compare the two of them, I don’t see one thing that Han Solo has over Luke. So I don’t really know why Lucasfilm or Disney or whoever it is that calls the shots now made the decision to go ahead with the Solo film, to begin with. They made a film hardly anyone wanted and managed to kill off the one character in the Star Wars universe that actually meant something to the fans all in the space of a year. Wow. When it’s all written down in a blog post like this, it’s too absurd for words.

I hope I don’t become one of those Star Wars fans that spreads toxicity online. I know I’m not like that but I can understand why so many fans hated The Last Jedi and wanted it to be remade.

I want the Skywalker saga to end well, but I fear that it will only divide the Star Wars fanbase even more. And after the mess that was Solo A Star Wars Story, faith in Disney to provide what the fans need is dwindling every day. Sorry JJ, I just don’t think you have what it takes to bring the fans together. I don’t know if anyone does.

    1. Yes, exactly! She was a definite highlight and when she took off her mask, I was really surprised. Unlike with Kylo Ren because he was unmasked in all the images leading up to the release of The Force Awakens but Enfys was a real mystery 😁
