This is an e-book that I’m currently reading and let’s just say that there are a lot of cross-references happening in the expanded Star Wars universe, and I mean, blatantly obvious references.

Here’s the first example which is taken from the first page of the book:

Twelve-year-old Obi-Wan Kenobi desperately wants to be a Jedi Knight. After years at the Jedi Temple, he knows the power of the lightsaber and the Force. But he cannot control his own anger and fear. Because of this, the Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn will not take him on as a Padawan apprentice.

Wait a minute now, this is OBI-WAN they’re talking about? Okay, so he was only 12 but still, this sounds very much like another young padawan who was full of anger and fear. This parallel cannot be overlooked – both Obi-Wan and Anakin grew up full of anger and fear and one of them went on to become a Sith Lord and the other, the polar opposite. What was different between the two? How did Obi-Wan overcome his weaknesses and succeed where Anakin could not?

Who would have thought that Obi-Wan Kenobi was turned down by Qui-Gon Jinn? This is why the expanded universe is so much fun to explore. There are so many facets to the characters you wouldn’t know otherwise.

To Be Continued in Part II
