A Blog with Purpose

I’ve read many blog posts about how to improve traffic to your blog, how to get more people to read what you write etc. At the end of the day, none of those things will matter if your blogging no longer has a purpose.

This may seem like a small thing to overcome, more like an ant-hill rather than a mountain. But I can tell you that as a creative person, that just isn’t the case at all. Sometimes life will overwhelm you to the point where you don’t know whether you are coming or going. And sometimes, the blog you thought would always help you out of those situations has evolved into something entirely different. This can also leave you feeling like you have no direction.

I feel like this sometimes, and I feel like this today. And it’s nobody’s fault directly, there is nobody to point to as the culprit. That’s just life, sometimes it sucks.

The “subject” I said I wouldn’t blog about again was stuff going on at work. I decided to stop posting about it because I was afraid my blog would get inundated with work-related issues and I didn’t want that. But work is a big part of my life (I assume it’s like this for most people) and therefore its impact on my every day well being is in turn, quite significant. That’s not what I want of course, but that is my reality. And pretending that it doesn’t exist or that it doesn’t hold sway over my self-esteem or my thoughts in any way is wrong because it does.

I wrote a whole paragraph about it all, but I decided to delete it. I have to work things out, but I don’t want every post I make to be about work. Which is why I feel like my blog has lost direction. Sometimes it’s a personal blog, sometimes it’s a Star Wars blog and other times it’s a writing blog. Can you have a successful blog that talks about all of these things at once?

I guess that all depends on what your idea of “success” is. 20 followers, 3000 followers or 100 thousand followers, what’s the point of that if nobody cares?

  1. Yes, your blog can be about whatever you want it to be about and still be successful. My original blog, moonstonemaiden, started out as strictly a writing how-to place but overtime it became more of a general musings blog, full of writing tips, my own original pieces, my thoughts on life, books, movies, photography… I found the more diverse, but still tonally similar my blog became, the more my readers loved it. Whimsical Mutterings is still relatively new but each time I branch out it’s recieved positively so I say make your blog whatever you want it to be and as long as you’re happy with it, success will follow in one fashion or another! 😊😊😊

    1. Sometimes I just don’t know what I’m doing with my blog lol. But you’re right, it shouldn’t matter what I use my blog for, someone else told me that as well – I should blog about whatever I want and if I’m happy with it, that’s all that matters 🙂 Thanks Tara 🙂
