How to Make a 3D Text Effect in Photoshop – Tutorial Review

Disclaimer: I have never used the 3D tool in Photoshop before so this tutorial really was a complete learning experience from beginning to finish. That said, I had a lot of fun once I started to get the hang of using the tool!

I started the tutorial yesterday and I spent some time getting comfortable with the different views and how to control the various tools. I became quite frustrated with it entirely and stopped to take a breather.

Note: This is an example of what you could make this tutorial. Your end result will most likely differ if you choose to alter the settings and materials within the 3D element itself like I did. Why be the same as someone else, right?

I came back to the tutorial a few hours later and I don’t exactly know why but everything just clicked the second time around. I was able to follow the step-by-step written instruction right up to the half-way point.

I decided to finish the tutorial with the video instruction instead. I wanted to try both (even though my preference is to use video over text instruction).

There is a link to a font if you want to use the tutor’s example font used in this tutorial. There is no PSD file so you really have to do everything from scratch with this one. I prefer it this way, I don’t think you can learn properly if you’re using someone else’s PSD file, but that’s just me. It might be a good thing for some people to see the final result in a PSD format before they start creating their own.

The step-by-step instruction was much easier to follow once I felt more comfortable with the tool but the video tutorial was so much better. I recommend using the video tutorial and skipping the text tutorial for this one.

Final Summary:

Tutor:

Time: A while. I would give yourself at least an hour if you’re not familiar with the 3D tools

Level: Beginner to Intermediate. If you’re already fluent with the 3D tool, this tutorial will be a breeze

Comes with both text and video instruction:

Rating: As I was able to use both the text and the video tutorial, I’ll give the text tutorial a 5.5/10 and the Video Tutorial 8.5/10

  1. I seem to remember you could set the depth of the text and the angle of the light source. Latter Photoshop had better 3d options. I still use version 8 mainly which is very old.

    1. Hey Neil 🙂 And yes, you are correct! You can still do all those things in Photoshop so the 3D tool itself is actually a separate part of Photoshop that allows you to “build” a true 3D image of whatever you’re creating. I must admit, I had a lot of fun even though I really didn’t know what I was doing half the time but I guess that’s the best part of learning 🙂 You can now subscribe to Adobe Creative and get access to all of Adobe’s products online if you want 🙂 It’s pretty neat.
