So you may have noticed I’m doing several tutorials at once just so that I have a way of comparing the kind of tutorials that are out there and available for people who want to learn. In most cases, these tutorials will always be free, but every now and then, I will be reviewing tutorials that require a subscription to complete.
This particular free Adobe for beginner’s course is definitely aimed at anyone who hasn’t used Adobe Photoshop before. The course is very casual, and the instructor is very laid back and also a fellow New Zealander (yay!) I like his style of teaching but these tutorials are not designed to be as in-depth as Aaron Nace’s tutorials, for example.
So if you’re looking for something that touches on different topics just enough to get you started, Adobe for Beginners via Envato/Design Tuts is the course for you. If you’re looking for more in-depth tutorials from beginner to intermediate level, Aaron Nace’s tutorials are designed with you in mind.
Today I finished up the Crop Tool in the Adobe for Beginner’s course. And again, I learned a new technique that I didn’t know before. Who would have thought of using the content aware tool with the crop tool to create a wider image? Not me, that’s for sure!
In the course we took this image which is in Portrait dimensions as opposed to Landscape and we tried cropping it to change those dimensions. Here’s the portrait image before cropping:
And the cropped to Landscape edit using the content aware tool:
As you can see, on the far left-hand side of the image, this technique is not exactly perfect. But if you’ve been following the courses I’ve been reviewing on my blog, you should now know a thing or two about editing images and it shouldn’t be too difficult to do, right?

I won’t do a summary of this as it’s only one lesson in a larger series of tutorials. But once I complete the entire series, I’ll do an overall summary for anyone that wants my opinion on the course as a whole.

Never heard of Content Aware must be a feature on a newer version. Which I will be unlikely to ever own. Moving on to gimp – asits cross platform and free – it’s not as good as photoshop but more than enough for my uses

Ah yeah, I tried GIMP but when I say I tried it I mean I spent about 10 minutes on it and I didn’t really like the interface all that much. It’s funny how you can get used to something for so long and then when you try something else it just feels so foreign. I have heard good things about GIMP though, quite a few people use it. I’ve had Photoshop on my computer in one form or another for many years so to move to something else would be kinda weird for me. That said, I do see the value in paying for it but I don’t expect anyone to pay for something if they can’t. You do what you can with what you have 🙂
