Today’s post is based on an interesting experience I had creating this movie poster. Using shapes and the path tool to create the effect for this poster was really fun to do. However, it was not without its issues.

So, the first thing to do is to gather assets. I saw two different tutorials for this poster; one was very in-depth and the other was around seven minutes long so not so detailed. As I was in a tight squeeze situation with my time, I opted to do the easier tutorial. And I am not so sure that was a great idea.

PRO TIP: Make sure you double-check your image dimensions beforehand so that you have enough room to fit in all the text!

Creating the image effect with the rectangular marquee tool and the rectangle path tool was awesome. But finishing off the effect did not prove to be as easy as I thought it would be so technically, it’s only half done and visible in one word on the poster.

I also realised that I had run out of room and had nowhere to finish the last part of the poster’s text. So my poster has no logos or movie details on the bottom like you see with most film posters today.

This was the first actual film poster I’ve created but it’s something I’ve wanted to do for some time and I’m thrilled that I have a primary focus now. I will continue to practice the technique until I am ready to do more with my skills but for now, here are the details of the tutorial:

Level: Beginner to Intermediate. Make sure you’re familiar with the path tool, the rectangular marquee tool and the shape tool. You should be very familiar with using type as well

Comment: I enjoyed this tutorial. It was fun to make and create the end result. While I was not 100 per cent happy with my creation, the fun aspect was the biggest takeaway from this tutorial. The tutor was very clear and concise and easy to follow.

Note for absolute beginners – there is also no PSD file so you’re entirely on your own making this!
