Did Han Solo Really Shoot First?

This question has been asked by fans for many years, and there are countless internet memes about it as well. If you’re a hardcore star wars fan, you probably know the answer to this question, but some people still debate what actually happened, despite there being footage out there that proves it.

I saw this awesome post on Reddit this morning and decided to post this on my website so if anyone is in doubt, doubt no more!

This is the original, unaltered video clip from Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope. One of the Redditors managed to pick up the original VHS version somewhere, and he uploaded this particular scene to Reddit because so many people asked to see it in its unaltered state.

I haven’t researched this much myself, but I do know that there is a version of all three of the original trilogy movies unaltered and in DVD format. I can’t remember where I found it now because it was some time ago, but there was a group of Star Wars fans that worked on it as a project and then uploaded it to the internet for fans. I might have to go looking again to see if I still have it bookmarked, but this is rare footage indeed. There is also a chance that the footage may have been taken down by now, so I wanted to show this before the same thing happens.

Let me know what you think? Have you ever seen this version before? I’d be keen to discuss it with you!

Stay safe, keep watching and creating and I’ll see you in the next post!

  1. It is ambiguous to me. There is so much FX in shot (smoke and flash) you can’t tell anything of who shot first. And I think it was done purposely like that so as not to set Han’s personality as either a good or bad guy too early, George might have wanted fans to think about it for a while (until Han arrived at the Battle of Yavin of course and cemented his reputation). Edgy characters are much more interesting.

    1. Ah yes, that’s a very good point. From where I looked at it, it looked like it was Han simply because of his body language and facial expression afterwards. I was trying to read his response to what had happened and never really noticed the SFX much until you mentioned it 🙂 I agree with your point about Lucas perhaps wanting for Han to remain somewhat elusive to the audience as the mystique adds to the adventure that Han Solo represented in the film. And I totally agree with edgy characters being far more interesting, I think that’s why I usually go for the bad guys if they show intelligence, cunning and badassery lol – do you get what I mean? Not one-dimensional and boring I mean who has time for that?

      1. All I have to do is mention Kylo Ren to you and I prove my point! (Anakin/Vader was also conflicted which made him interesting too but his arc covered the whole Original Trilogy). Han’s character was clever as he was always in that grey area but for the right reasons – to survive and protect those he cared for. He became a bit respectable in ESB and ROTJ but that rogue edge was always there when he needed.

      2. Ahahah Kylo Ren is my faveeee 🙂 Well, he is one of my favourite characters at least from the sequels 😀 But yes, indeed, he is a great example as is Anakin Skywalker 🙂 And yeah, Han Solo did some dubious things but he was around when it mattered (well, for most of the time). He did let Leia down and Luke when he had to, but I think that showed his character had a strong-willed nature which everyone knows is attractive 😛
