Star Wars Cinematic Universe – Behind the Scenes and the Rule of Two

My friend ForTyeth (whom many of you will already know as a master lightsaber model creator) picked today’s behind-the-scenes image for this post. While I couldn’t find the original, here is one that shows Christopher Lee with his stunt double from Attack of the Clones proving that the Sith “Rule of Two” is very much a thing!

  1. Hello Julie, glad you liked the image and found one you could embed. I really like this image as it looks like Mr Lee is inspecting Kyle Rowling’s stunt saber as if to say “That’s your saber?” I believe the saber is one of the gimmick stunt sabers I described to you previously. The blade has a transparent film wrapped around it and also a power cable dangling down to the floor..meaning this hilt was illuminated so it cast ambient light onto Kyle as he spun it around (this makes the lighting appear more realist with coloured highlights and shadow etc) ILM could then just Rotoscope a blade on top of the footage to give it the classic ILM saber look.

      1. Hi again, thankfully the technology has advanced a little bit. Nowadays battery packs are smaller and more powerful and LED bulbs much brighter. ILM now use sabers that have rechargeable batteries and LED bulbs similar to the custom replica ones you can purchase as a fan. The ILM hilts also have GPS transmitters built in so the CGI computer can plot where the hilt and blades are in shot and the Rotoscope effect can be applied automatically in post production using the data co-ordinates transmitted from the stunt saber. Now you may ask “How good are these custom replicas?” Well I own one and the following picture is of me and there are no added effects – the flare and aura is how the camera picks up the light. But you’ll get an idea how good these replicas are:

      2. Ahahah oh wow that is awesome!!! Gosh I see what you mean about the light, wow that is so bright! I don’t own a lightsaber yet lol. I’ve held off on buying one thus far. I did look at getting a replica of Kylo Ren’s one but to be honest, I don’t really have anywhere to display it and it needs to be displayed because 🙂 That is a cool pic though! 😀 How many lightsabers do you own??

      3. These replicas are pretty impressive. This one I own has a 12 watt LED which puts out around 360 Lumens similar to a car headlight, so you have to be careful when the polycarbonate blade is removed. It is also machined from aircraft grade aluminium so you can have mock fights with these type of replica.
        Regards displaying hilts there are wall mounts you can buy (and some collectors even use those rubberised clips that hold paddles on canoes) but if you bought one you should use it to take over the galaxy and finish what your grandfather started…wait what am I saying? Defend the galaxy yes defend the galaxy.
        I currently own the one saber that works but I bought an empty Qui-Gon Jinn replica and am in the process of installing the electronics into it myself, so hopefully soon my collection of battle ready sabers will be two.

      5. Hi there, I will definitely post more pictures of the Qui-Gon hilt when I can, it is just expensive and difficult to purchase the parts. They either sell out fast or are in stock when I don’t have spare cash. I am also building a cosplay outfit to go with the saber (and I just splashed out on a very expensive part of the costume).
