There are many reasons why Darth Vader works so well as a villain. Everything from his aggressive appearance to his commanding voice. And as a Sith, he became even more dangerous than he was when he was Anakin Skywalker.
But none of that is as important as how quickly he became Darth Vader.
Darth Vader’s rise to power occurred in a very short space of time. He transitioned from a slave boy in the desert on Tatooine (he was 9 turning 10) to one of the most powerful Jedi Knights in the history of the Jedi (around 23 – 24 years old). He then went on to become one of the most powerful men in the Galaxy as second in command to the Emperor of the Galactic Empire.
Depending on what you read, that’s less than 15 years!
Who would want to be answerable to Darth Sidious? Darth Vader seemed to handle it just fine until he met his demise. This is even more of a testament to how powerful he was, despite the Emperor’s fail-safe guards against keeping him in line. Darth Vader was even a threat to the Emperor, and there are examples of books and comics where the Emperor himself is in awe of Vader’s appetite for killing:
He was the ultimate killing machine until it came down to killing his own flesh and blood, which is an entirely different topic for another post.
Darth Vader’s rise to power is one of the most disturbing things about him. There are many others if you look hard enough into his history. But that one thing kind of stuck out to me the most.
