Return of the Jedi Deleted Scene – Luke Skywalker’s Lightsaber

You can see so much more from discovering deleted footage from movies you enjoy, and for this blog, it’s obviously Star Wars. But I happened upon this little clip by chance on YouTube:

In this clip, you can see Vader reaching out to Luke as he is building his GREEN LIGHTSABER! I mean what a find this is – and it reminds me again that I really have to get back to my Star Wars Blu-rays very soon so I can go through footage like this that will most likely be featured on the discs.

The Green Lightsaber

So many questions about this clip though such as why did Luke opt on a green kyber crystal as opposed to a blue one? And couldn’t Darth Vader sense that Luke was building a light side lightsaber? I mean it’s green and that’s not a dark side colour as we all know.

This is amazing, really – have you seen this clip before? If so, let me know what you think in the comments!

Stay safe out there, keep watching and creating and I’ll see you in tomorrow’s post!

POST UPDATE EDIT

If you are at all keen to see exactly how this beautiful lightsaber was constructed, my good friend ForTyeth has created a wonderful post on this lightsaber construction. Please check out his post right here and leave a comment! His posts are incredibly detailed and quite amazing to read – if you’re into Lightsaber construction, his site is a must-follow!

    1. I’m glad you think so πŸ™‚ If you had to vote for your top five Star Wars films, would this one be in the list? I’ll be posting about that soon as I am keen to see what my readers enjoy the most about the franchise πŸ™‚

  1. Hi Julie, you won’t be surprised to know I have seen this clip before – I stumbled upon it a few years ago when I had a discussion on a forum about how Luke managed to build a saber with no help or instruction from either Old Ben Kenobi or from Master Yoda’ s force ghosts. It transpires that (in a comic series iirc) Luke went back to Kenobi’s home and found Ben’s journals and personal items which included schematics for a saber. There was no mention of a crystal however and some people believe the Kyber Luke uses is actually from Qui-Gon Jinn’s saber. Other people have said Luke used a Sith crystal.
I do know I was fascinated to see a saber being assembled, even if it was only the final tweaks being made for it to function….but I bet you’d like to know what was inside that little blinking box Luke was poking inside of huh? Well I can show you, I too got a copy of Ben Kenobi’s blueprints and you can see what I built here:

Thanks for the post and the real life explanation why Luke’s saber is green is simply due to the fact the blue blade would appear to vanish when he (Mark Hamill) held the saber upright (above the horizon) during the Sarlacc Pit/Jabba’s Barge scene fight sequence so the director changed it green so it stood out against the backdrop of both the Tatooine sand and sky!

    1. Ahhh yes! That’s incredible! I have updated my post with links to your site and your post on the construction of this lightsaber πŸ™‚ Your work really does need a bigger audience and I’ll do my bit to help in that regard πŸ™‚ And yes, I did read somewhere recently that is the reason for the green coloured kyber crystal. Which is neat but I prefer to think that Luke chose it because a) he wanted something different to blue so he could be recognised as a Jedi Knight (his construction skills with a lightsaber) and b) Green is a wholesome colour which is linked to growth and nature πŸ™‚ and since the force is a natural element in the star wars universe, it kinda makes sense he would choose that colour πŸ˜€

      2. Wow thank you very much that’s very kind. The reasons you mentioned were the ideas that were floated around back in the 80’s when ROTJ came out, Luke’s attempt to show he wasn’t like his father. Luke’s design being based on Obi-Wan’s hilt might have been a painful sight for Vader as his son’s hilt didn’t resemble or honour his own (as Jedi traditionally incorporated design details of either their family or Master’s weapons when building their own Jedi Knight hilt) and it had a green blade.
        Thanks again for the shoutout.
