Star Wars Cinematic Universe – Behind the Scenes #9

Via Reddit – “Don’t Fall on the Mattress, Luke!”

THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK

I find this image so funny because when you’re watching this scene, it is one of the most intense scenes in the trilogy. And then you see this and the mattresses, and you’re just like… wait, what?!

So in this scene, do you think Luke was hoping that he’d die? He basically lets himself fall, and he has no idea where the fall will take him. So to me, he is saying to Vader “I’d rather die than be your son!”… but it can be interpreted in different ways depending on how you look at it.

And this is one of the most fundamental differences between Luke’s experience and Rey’s. I think a lot of the newer generation of fans see Rey as their equivalent to Luke which makes sense, I guess. Except when you look at scenes like this which really, can’t compare to Rey’s experience with Kylo Ren in the throne room. He was reaching out to her for his own selfish reasons and least of all because he “liked” her romantically. But that is a world away from what happened to Luke.

It’s not every day that you learn that your father is responsible for the massacre of so many people and is literally the evilest person in the galaxy (well, almost). And Rey, well she gets to turn down a dude who killed his own father so he could give himself over to evil and the dark side of the force. Not quite the same thing, is it?

Let me know what you think in the comments and what this image does for you!
