Lucasfilm Reveals First Look Trailer for The High Republic

It looks like the Lucasfilm machine is in full swing promoting the latest iteration of the Jedi during the High Republic era. The new trailer shows off a lot more than we’ve seen thus far and puts the Jedi storyline during this period into perspective.

I have some questions about it, such as what is the great evil they mention? I know there are villains portrayed as the Nihil, and they are the Jedi’s primary enemy in this series, but that doesn’t sound like the same thing. The Nihil are portrayed as “space Vikings” that steal, kill and rampage their way across the galaxy. While that sounds like a mission for any Jedi to resolve, it doesn’t sound like a “great evil” to me.

What do you think? Can you elaborate on this at all? I haven’t read very much as my interest currently still lies elsewhere in the Star Wars universe, but let me know what you think of the trailer and where you think this era of the Jedi will go in the comments!

  1. Hello Julie, The Nihil could be followers of an old legend Sith Lord named Darth Nihilus (who appears in the computer game Knights Of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords – aka Kotor II The Sith Lords). Nihilus lived around 3,800 years before the Battle of Yavin (and so 3,600 years before the High Republic is set) and was trained by Darth Traya. Traya and Nihilus along with a third Sith named Darth Sion formed a Sith Triumvirate that became so powerful they killed many Jedi and wiped the Jedi out for a short period of time. It is possible that this new faction could be linked to him (Nihilus) though he is not canon at the moment. However it is rumoured that one of the statues on Exogol in TRoS is in fact the figure of Nihilus and so would make him partially canon.
It wouldn’t be the first time that Disney has “borrowed” a character or plot from the old “Extended Universe/Legends”/PC video game continuum. In the movie SOLO, Dryden Vos’ study had a desk with an inscription carved into it and the scripture mentioned another EU/Legends character named Exar Kun.
The dates I quote are approximate as Lucasfilm changed the timeline recently and some of the info is considered non canon as I mention but….it is a possibility. It’s rumoured that Nihilus upon his death managed to transfer his essence to his armour where it resided for many years…there’s nothing to say he might not have survived somehow.
Anyway I’ll end here, it’s a fun idea and if not the solution to the mystery it will give you some points to read up on!

    1. Hey there FT 🙂 Yeah I know about the triumvirate, Darth Nihilus and Traya (who was originally Jedi Master Kreia) and Darth Sion. Having played SWTOR for many years now, it’s a little hard not to know about these particular Sith and Jedi 🙂 But that is the first thing I thought of too – Darth Nihilus. If there was any type of connection, that would be pretty cool 🙂

  2. Hmm, I’m not sure. I know the Nihil and the Drengir (a malevolent plant-like monster) will be antagonists, but not sure if either of them will vie for “control of the Force itself.” Can’t wait to find out!

      1. Yes, I read his reply, and it’s interesting. And the new show The Acolyte will show some Sith stirrings, I believe, though it takes place closer to the prequel era, about 50 years before, I think.

      2. Yeah I am not sure about that as I’ve heard different things from different sources about who the acolyte is supposed to be… if it has anything to do with Darth Plagueis I am going to cry lol
