Star Wars Controversy – Krystina Arielle

Today my Star Wars Twitter feed was in an uproar over race! Comments made by the new host of the Star Wars web series for The High Republic Krystina Arielle has fueled racist bigots in the Star Wars community and supporters alike.

This is Arielle in case you do not know who she is:

And the tweets in question that got under the skin of some Star Wars fans even though I note these comments were made in May of last year:

Via Twitter

I’ve only just started to read up on what is going on, but it appears that Krystina made the above comments about “white people” (which some are saying is her being racist) and she was attacked on social media for it.

Star Wars chimed in supporting Arielle:

Which caused even more controversy as people started calling out Star Wars for treating People of Colour with disrespect – particularly Kelly-Marie Tran and John Boyega.

I am not a political person meaning I don’t like or feed drama in the fandom – any fandom, Star Wars or anything else. I just don’t like to get involved on that level in an online environment. I have seen way too many bad situations occur and unfold online to know better. But racism in ANY shape or form is disgusting and has no place in this world.

There is an #IStandWithKrystina hashtag now on Twitter. If you want your voice heard on this matter, search that on Twitter, and you’ll find just about anyone with a Twitter account sounding off about it.

It’s unfortunate and sad that our fandom is marred by these situations and people who think it’s acceptable to dislike someone for the colour of their skin. And for the record, if you are a person of colour and make racist statements, you’re a racist.

noun

a person who believes in racism, the doctrine that one’s own racial group is superior or that a particular racial group is inferior to the others.

adjective

of or like racists or racism: racist policies; racist attitudes.

Krystina Arielle wasn’t making racist comments about “white people”. She was trying to raise awareness about something she feels strongly about. That isn’t the same thing as saying your race is more superior than another. I think some people need to read the dictionary to understand what racism is.

  1. No, racism is “a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human racial groups determine cultural or individual achievement”. And frankly this is what apparently Kristina believes.

Racism is not wrong because human races are “equal”. Racism is wrong because races DO NOT EXISTS. We are all mixed. And skin color do not determine who is “brother” to whom and who can or cannot speak.

    1. I didn’t know that about Kristina but then again, I didn’t dig very hard. Race and politics don’t really have a place on my blog but it was relating to a star wars celebrity so I blogged about it. Thanks for your insight and for dropping by 🙂
