I saw this on social media and really liked it so I wanted to introduce it here on my blog as part of the Star Wars Cinematic Universe posts. I am looking through other Star Wars books that I own and I am seeing so much concept art I have never seen before online, especially the earliest stuff drawn by Ralph McQuarrie. The original artist who really did bring Star Wars to life with his art.
So to celebrate every concept artist involved in creating “a galaxy far, far away”, I want to post concept art for the screen and match it to its scene in the movies.
Here are some scenes everyone will know even if the final version that made it to screen looks different:
I like that the droids were added to the final scene in the movie. To me that emphasizes just how important the droids were to Luke and Leia but mostly Luke 😊 In a way, they are every bit part of the Skywalker family.
Yoda looks a lot different in the concept art I think. You can still tell its him but they made a few changes before he was finally seen in the movies as the Yoda we all know and love.

Hi there Julie, I have seen these images before and they never fail to impress me how little the film version varied from the concept art, showing how brilliant McQuarrie’s vision was. A few interesting facts: McQuarrie based Yoda’s head and facial features on a mixture of his own face and that of Albert Einstein. And McQuarrie has been immortalised as a character twice, as the Mon Calamrian ship designer Quarrie who appeared in Star Wars Rebels: Wings of the Master and his second appearance (again as Quarrie the Mon Cala) in Lego Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures. In the Freemaker Adventures Quarrie designs and builds the Arrowhead and in Rebels he is revealed as the designer of the B-Wing Fighter-Bomber!

I didn’t know that about McQuarrie but it wouldn’t surprise me in the least. He is legendary and very much behind the first star wars film looking the way that it does. And yeah, I love how they kept little details of what he drew in the films, it’s just amazing 🙂

It does look a little different 🙂 Not sure if I like it yet, it might take some getting used to but I like that it’s different as well as the same if you know what I mean lol
