Star Wars Fandom – How Did You Become a Fan?

Hello, fellow Star Wars friends! I hope the week is treating you well or at least better than last week!

So this is something I am keen to find out from my fellow Star Wars friends: how you got into Star Wars or who introduced you to Star Wars?

My story is a sentimental one that I’ve shared several times before on this blog, but I’m okay with telling it again. My apologies to anyone who already knows my story!

So for me, it was basically my Dad that got me into Star Wars when I was a youngling. My Dad was a huge science fiction fan, and he was also a voracious reader. Through his love for science fiction, I was introduced to the wonderful Star Wars universe. And now that he has passed, it’s the one thing in my life that I feel he gave to me as a gift so I could do the same and share my love of Star Wars with others.

And well, here we are, and it looks like I’m doing exactly what he did for me all those years ago. 😁

Do you have a special story about how you became a fan that you’re willing to tell? Please let me know in the comments, as I am excited to read your very own star wars story.

Catch you in the comments or, if not, in tomorrow’s post! Stay safe out there.

  1. It is wonderful that you have these memories of your dad. For me, I actually got in Star Wars through the movie novelizations. I picked out the book-adaptions of all the original trilogy films at a book fair, and my parents bought them for me. I had actually never seen the movies, but fell in love with the universe through the books. I started reading more and more, started asking for Star Wars action figures to play with, and so on. Finally, I actually saw the movies! Probably backwards from how most people got into Star Wars lol!

  2. Hi Julie, I think I fell into the Force and Star Wars through my school friends having the toys, then the VHS video tapes hired from the Blockbuster shop (well the local cornershop as Blockbuster wasn’t in my town)….then I was lucky because my dad was friends with the town’s local cinema’s chief projectionist – so I got posters and leaflets and “special viewings”. But when I got my first lightsaber and modified it to be green (every saber sold back in the early 80’s was white) was when I was totally hooked.

      1. Hi there, yes my dad had a few interesting friends. He was an amateur radio operator (aka Citizen’s Band radio or CB) and the projectionist was also a CB radio owner and they got to know each other that way. As a result I got to get into the theatre early and sometimes watched movies from the projection room – very “Hollywood”!

  3. Hi Julie, I saw Empire in the theater with some friends back in 1980. I was about 10 or so, had no idea what it was all about, but once I saw it, I was obsessed! Took me a while to actually watch the first movie (on VHS), and then waited FOREVER for Return of the Jedi to come out, lol. I was obsessed with Star Wars through my teens and very early 20’s, but then drifted away from it for many years (though it was always in my heart). When the sequel trilogy came out (and specifically, after the Rise of Skywalker), I became obsessed again and decided to blog about it. That’s such a sweet story about you and your Dad! That must make it even more special.

    1. Hey there πŸ˜€ Oh yes, your story is similar to mine like I came into it at a young age but then I lost touch with a lot of the things I used to love when my Dad was alive (it was a little too painful for me at the time). So when I was much older and a little less sensitive I became obsessed all over again. Star Wars was always in my life in one form or another but when the sequels came out I was right back there again feeling like a little kid lol I am so grateful for Star Wars for bringing me so much joy and really nice people to connect with such as yourself πŸ™‚ it really is quite an amazing thing.

      1. Same πŸ™‚ I feel like part of a real community of kind and wonderful people. Community is what it’s all about. Once you’ve found your place, it makes everything so much worthwhile.

  4. Hi Julie, that’s a brilliant story about your dad getting you into SW through his love of sci-fi. We had a neighbour who owned a projector and he would treat the kids in our grove to viewings on our living room walls of films like Planet of the Apes, Battlestar Galactica, Superman, and of course Star Wars – which was when I first saw it. Prior to that though were the toys, an annual, and a huge Darth Vader Poster I had on my wall which first got me hooked. My first toy was Luke’s Landspeeder and C3P0. Later on I had many of the figures including an X-Wing Fighter and Luke X-Wing Pilot (my fave) πŸ™‚

    1. That is so cool! I love hearing the stories of how people became fans, they’re so great. Everyone has their own unique experience which for me, is the whole reason I became a fan. To connect with others that share my love for Star Wars πŸ™‚ Sounds like you had an awesome introduction to a galaxy far, far away πŸ˜€ Thank you for commenting and for the kind words πŸ™‚
