Star Wars Cinematic Universe – Did Rey Become a Jedi Master?

At the end of Star Wars, The Rise of Skywalker, Rey is seen with her new lightsaber. She can also see both Luke and Leia as force ghosts.

I came across this post online as I was reading through updates on WordPress, and this triggered me a little (not gonna lie, probably more than a little) 😅

Following the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY, Rey took up the family name of her mentors Luke and Leia Skywalker. Now the last Jedi, Rey Skywalker ascended to the rank of Master.

The thing is, anybody can post a blog article and rant about what they think is happening in the Star Wars universe, but that doesn’t make any of it fact or canon, for that matter. However, there are many debates over what is and isn’t canon, so I try to stay away from all that. But this post got me thinking – are there fans out there that actually think Rey is a Jedi Master?

Was Rey even “The Last Jedi?” Technically, yes, Rey was the last Jedi because when Ben Solo became Ben Solo again, he had reverted back to being a Jedi but then died by sacrificing himself to save Rey. So at that point, Rey was the very last Jedi that we know of in the cinematic universe. I’d go so far as to say that she was probably the last Jedi we know of in canon as well. But a Jedi Master?

Let’s see what the sources online have to say about Rey’s status as a Jedi Master.

At some point after, while attempting to restore galactic peace, Rey became a Jedi Master.[52]

This is listed in The Star Wars Book by Pablo Hidalgo (referred to in the Wookiepedia article). According to this reference, Rey became a Jedi Master. But is that canon?

If it is, I don’t agree with it for a couple of reasons. First, to become a Jedi Master, you have to take on a Padawan. If there were no other remnants of the Jedi Order (seeing as Rey was the last Jedi), how did this happen? Did Rey just take the title herself? And we won’t even talk about the Jedi High Council in this debate.

Secondly – Anakin Skywalker considered one of the strongest Jedi of all time, never made it to Jedi Master. How could Rey do something that Anakin couldn’t, given their age and years of experience? Anakin was trained from a very early age. Rey only discovered the force when she was in her late teens. None of that makes any sense.

To be honest, all of those so-called “sources” online are edited by people, just normal Star Wars fans like you and me. It is the same with Wikipedia (so many people, including myself, seem to forget it’s not really a legitimate source of information in that regard). That’s not to say that I am not grateful because I am. It takes a lot of effort and time to maintain a database of that size, and the fandom would be less of a fandom without it.

It is important to note that this post has absolutely nothing to do with Rey not being as powerful as other Jedi or any of that garbage because she’s a woman. Frankly, anyone that thinks that or even entertains that garbage can just go right along and unfollow me because that is misogynistic and has no place here or anywhere, to be honest. Just wanted to make that clear, now moving on.

I couldn’t find a reliable source that confirms The Star Was Book as canon, and several sources online debate it, so I’m going to say no at this point until proven otherwise (Wookiepedia says it is but again, refer to my details above about Wookiepedia as a source).

It is possible that Rey did other things not shown in the cinematic universe, such as founding the new Jedi Order (again, nothing confirms this online). I can imagine many fans would not be happy about that, considering Luke tried to do this in the Legends books, which isn’t considered canon according to Wookiepedia.

I know that Pablo Hidalgo is part of the Lucas Film Story Group, and therefore whatever he writes is considered canon. But I’m still not convinced.

  1. I think it’s strange with how little training Rey had, how quickly she became a master. There wasn’t enough of a struggle for her character in my opinion. But, then again, she may have just been born with a strong connection to the force.

    1. I’d buy that if it wasn’t for the fact that other force sensitives considered far more connected to the force than Rey took years to hone their force abilities. While I agree that saying Rey is OP or Rey is a “Mary Sue” is lame, there are a myriad of reasons why fans think this about Rey. I found an excellent argument for Rey being a “Mary Sue” here that isn’t sexist or degrading of Rey as a character in any way (quite rare lol) so check it out if you’re interested https://www.quora.com/Is-Rey-from-Star-Wars-The-Force-Awakens-a-Mary-Sue. Hi there…aside from the obvious point that I was overlooked for promotion to Jedi GrandMaster of the Order….I don’t think Rey went through the trials and ordeals that other Padawans, Knights and Masters went through to attain their ranks. But then again it was “a desperate time requiring desperate measures” I suppose. However the only feasible ways I can see that Rey was made a Master are that a) she did more than we are aware of currently (activities off-screen between TLJ and TRoS) and B) Maybe…just maybe when Luke was talking to Kylo and corrected Ren “I’m not the Last Jedi…there is another [Rey}” he also bestowed the rank of Master to her as she basically “took his place”.

    1. Yes some good points there FT. If Luke had bestowed her with the rank of master, I am hoping they would have confirmed something that big in the movie. But you’re right, anything that happened “off-screen” could explain how she received the rank of master. I am going to agree with Tina on this one that it isn’t canon yet and until they officially make it canon, I am going to say no to her being a Jedi Master for now 🙂

      1. I am with you there, I don’t think that Rey is a Master yet, well I haven’t seen or read anything canon to say she is. I see people quoting Dave Filoni which is fine but until it happens in a written work or filmed on screen then no, On the forum that I post on whenever a person announces they’ve got a new lightsaber everyone tells the person “Pictures or it didn’t hapen!” -meaning post pictures and/or video of your new saber to prove it (and so we can enjoy the saber too).

        p.s. I just remembered that Han and Chewie had a conversation when they were reunited in ROTJ where Chewie told Han that Luke was a Jedi and had planned the escape – to Han’s initial disbelief…soo Rey could be a Master. Ugh, why did Disney and Lucasfilm make canon so complicated to follow?

  3. My opinion is this: if I see it in a movie or a canon book (in other words, a novel that is written by Lucasfilm story group) then I’ll believe that Rey is a master. Otherwise, it’s just conjecture. On the other hand, it’s a different galaxy than it was during the reign of the Jedi Order. Who know if the Order will even be revived? Maybe Jedi are something different now, and the title “master” is used differently now, with different criteria. But again, I want to see it in a movie or a book (a canon novel, NOT supposed “reference books,” even if it is Pablo Hidalgo). That’s my take, lol.

    1. Yeah I think I am the same on that side of things. It doesn’t look like it’s canon at this point, it’s being debated everywhere online where people go for updates on the Star Wars universe. Even the Wookiepedia page has red flags advising that nobody has confirmed it to be canon yet. So I’m gonna go with no for now 🙂 Not that it would be an issue if she was, I would just prefer it to be canonised first lol. Also FT made a few good points too, she hadn’t gone through any of the trials that Jedi usually go through to attain the rank of Master (that we know of). This is where things get tricky because she may have done these things off-screen… bleh lol

      1. Absolutely. I would really love to find out what Rey does in the future, as far as training other Jedi. Will she re-establish a “Jedi Order” like in the prequels? Or is that kind of organization doomed to fail? What will the Jedi look like in the future? So many questions….lol.

      2. Yeah I’d love to see a continuation myself, as flawed as the prequels were, I would love to see them continue with some of the characters from that prequel trilogy. I don’t HATE any star wars lol I try to enjoy it because it’s such a huge part of my life so I’d totally support it 🙂 I just doubt it’ll happen. But we do have a lot of GREAT star wars content coming our way and I am EXCITTTEEEEEDDDDD lol
