The behind the scenes episode of the final episode of The Mandalorian Season Two has arrived. Due to being in my time zone, I haven’t watched the whole thing yet *which most people have seen a lot of the people I follow online live in the United States*. But I’ve seen some snippets like this one below:

I’ve really liked what I’ve seen so far and looked forward to watching the rest after work today, but I do have a few questions already about what I’ve read today and watched:
- Why didn’t they just use the actor playing Luke as Luke because he looks a lot like him 😅
- How did they change Luke’s voice to sound like Luke from Return of the Jedi?
- Do you think they will use the new technology to continue Luke’s story from his appearance on The Mandalorian?
- There are many rumours around online that Luke will either get his own TV show or that Luke will feature heavily in cross-over shows like The Mandalorian and Ahsoka (especially since the time periods used in each show is in alignment with when Luke was starting the New Jedi Order and also during Thrawn’s ascendence and Ezra Bridger’s disappearance). After further research online, the timeline is between 4ABY and 9ABY, so I guess it’s possible!
So I am excitedly waiting to watch the rest and trying to avoid major spoilers (I already had two because I went on Twitter. 😅

Hi Julie, I think I can answer one of your questions (possibly two). The first is regards Luke’s voice and how it sounds like ROTJ Luke – the Sound FX guy probably edited Mark’s voice using Pitch and Time Shift effects (no not time travel). Pitch and Time shift is sort of like Auto-tune and can raise or lower the pitch of someone’s voice. The pitch was probably raised because young Luke would sound a bit whiney, even though he had matured a bit by ROTJ – but raising the pitch of a voice recording makes it sound fast and squeaky like Alvin and the Chipmunks. To rectify this the FX guy would then use Time Shift which can alter the speed of the recording by stretching or shrinking portions of a recording without altering the pitch (so restoring a normal speech speed). They did a similar trick on Natalie Portman’s voice to lower it and make it sound more “regal” when she was Queen Amidala. The alternative possibility is Mark just imitated his younger performance and the FX guy made a mix of old and new recordings. (Mark is also a fantastic voice over artist having been the voice of Boolio in Star Wars and The Joker in animated Batman amongst a few).
And the second question I might have an answer for, why Mark played Luke instead of the younger actor? Weird Al Yankovich sang about the reason in “My Yoda” the lyrics go…
“Well, I heard my friends really got in a mess
So I’m gonna have to leave Yoda, I guess
But I know that I’ll be coming back some day
I’ll be playing this part till I’m old and gray
The long-term contract I had to sign
Says I’ll be making these movies till the end of time
With my Yoda…..y.o..yo….yo..yo….Yoda!”
At least I hope this is the reason – I laughed my head off when I first heard the lyrics then read the tweets and comments Mark made later!

Lol that Yoda song is hilarious! But I agree with all of that lol we don’t know what kind of contractual obligation Mark still has with Lucasfilm/Disney but it sounds to me like they approached him because they needed Luke again which I know Mark would jump at the chance to bring him back to the fandom. I’ve always said that killing off Luke was the worst thing they could have done to the fandom. I noticed that Kathleen Kennedy has taken a serious back seat since all the crap happened with the sequel trilogy. And now they’re bringing Luke back lol it just seems too much like she screwed things up with the trilogy and they’re trying to passify the fans by bringing Luke back again. I don’t like to get political but it seems like Disney know how important the fans are and that they screwed up by killing the biggest character in the saga. Regarding the voice FX that’s pretty cool, I don’t know a lot about making movies so thanks for sharing that info 😀

Hi there, yes really deep down I think someone at Disney still remembers what family entertainment is and realised their mistake in killing off one of the family how they did (and the “other stuff” in the background not necessary to tell a good story). I will try to be fair and say that Disney/Lucasfilm are at a big disadvantage in that sadly none of us are getting any younger and Harrison, Mark and Anthony (Daniels) can’t physically keep returning to their roles – but as we have found out there are ways to help fans transition to new material…Disney just got it wrong.
And the Sound Recording stuff goes way back to the early days of phonographs and wax cylinder recording machines. If you play a vinyl record at the wrong speed it sounds either slow or as if the singer is breathing helium. I mentioned “Alvin and the Chipmunks” and they released a single back in the fifties called “Witch Doctor” that featured the lead singer Dave Seville singing backing vocals as the chipmunk characters by raising the speed and pitch of his voice in studio, Nowadays vocal editing happens all the time, remember Cher’s “Do you Believe (In life after love)”? That had a vocal effect called the Vocoder which alters the pitch of notes sung beyond the ability/range of the singer.
Anyhoo I’m starting to ramble so I’ll just say I’m all for watching as much Luke as we can get!
