EPISODE SIX
Welcome fellow Star Wars fans to another update/review and discussion. I say discussion because there is something I wanted to discuss regarding the latest episode separately. I am keen to see what my readers think because my Instagram readers are all a mixed bag of views on this.
So here’s the question which you can think about while I pick apart episode six of The Book of Boba Fett. The question is (only for those that have seen it obviously) “Do you think the latest episode was purely fan-service or do you think it was genuinely entertaining?”
On with the review – so there will be spoilers (if you managed to not read my spoiler banner above, you should click away right about now). I went into this episode completely unaware of who would be in it. I had a feeling already that Grogu might reappear because of The Mandalorian’s path heading right back to him again. This means that Luke Skywalker could also appear. But there were two other characters that were also very exciting to see which I didn’t know about being Ahsoka Tano and Cad Bane.
Some fans are criticising this episode saying the script was seriously lacking and relying on “fan service” to appeal to the fandom. Did we need to see Luke Skywalker for this story to progress? Absolutely! I believe Luke being who he is (and his importance), it’s inevitable that the story of Boba Fett AND Din Djarin would include him. Luke is on the precipice of creating the Jedi Academy which was or is a huge deal in Legends lore. I am not sure where they’ll go with Luke’s story. But the fact that he’s in this show is a good indication of where Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau (and the other writers) might be going with Boba Fett and even Mando’s storylines.
Boba Fett may not be in every episode of his show but that doesn’t mean it’s not his story. I understand why some fans are a little unhappy about all of these huge Star Wars characters appearing in his show. But perhaps there is a good reason for it? I think as an audience we need to have a little more faith in the creators and their processes. When I read comments about this episode I see fans calling out the series as not being about Boba Fett at all. And I understand that too. But I am going to push those comments aside and focus on what may lie ahead; kinda like Luke does 😄😃 And I find that to be really exciting!

We also see other minor characters reappearing like Cobb Vanff who has quickly become a fan favourite. Timothy Olyphant does a fantastic job as the “western” Sheriff looking after his people in the middle of the dune sea. What happens to him is HUGE as well but nobody even talked about that😅. Everyone focused on the lack of Boba Fett and the other characters showing up.
Did anyone even care about Cad Bane?? He’s only one of the most skilled bounty hunters in the Star Wars universe!
It’s not silly for the writers to want Luke, Mando and Boba all in the same show. This is completely new territory for the creators and writers. Nobody really knows what happened after the years that followed the Rebellion in Ep 06. There is a huge amount of time after Vader’s death and the new Jedi order being created by Luke. They are merely trying to write the best story that cohesively joins all of the main characters of their shows together.
My final comments are really nothing more than advice if anyone wants to take it. And that is if you’re dead-set as fans to dislike where Boba’s story is going, you’re probably not going to like what happens next. From what I’ve read, Boba’s story was only ever meant to be one standalone season. And could explain why they’ve got so many other characters involved.

Look, “fans” need to make up their minds. When it was all about Boba, they complained about it. And now that he’s not in it for two episodes, they complain about it. I thought Favreau and Filoni could do no wrong? This fandom is so frustrating sometimes, lol. Anyhow, I loved this episode. I have a problem with the term “fan service.” Well, aren’t we fans? Don’t we WANT to see these characters? As long as they play an important part in the story, I don’t see why they shouldn’t be there. This series has been different from what we expected, that’s for sure. But I trust that the creators know what they’re doing. Bring on Episode 7!

Agreed lol even the fan service thing, it makes me cringe when I see people using it on social media. To me it just looks like the writers and creators made something for the fandom OMG really??? For us? Lol it’s really quite laughable. And yeah, that is part of the reason why I need a break every year from Star Wars. The fans just get so angry and forget the real reason behind why they became fans in the first place. Now it’s all about saying mean and nasty things about the shows or the actors and even nastier things to each other… I pass.

Yup. I stay away from Star Wars on Twitter, watch only a select few Youtube channels, and only one Facebook group that requires only positive comments. I don’t need that drama or negativity in my life, there’s enough of that already, lol. I truly don’t understand these “fans” that get off on hate and ridicule. That’s definitely dark side stuff, lol.

Yeah, I get a bit of it on IG but I’ve only ever had one person say nasty stuff to me on WordPress which I think is pretty good. I try to surround myself with positive people as well which helps. I find it quite funny that almost every person that has ever been mean or said nasty things on IG is an account marked “Private” with very few followers. Seems to be a pattern lol

I have no idea what people were saying on social media about this episode, but that is mostly because I’m not on social media, and also because I don’t really care one way or the other what people were saying. I learned a long time ago that Twitter in particular is a poor representation of whatever the Star Wars “fandom” is. Perhaps people writ-large enjoyed the episode, or perhaps they didn’t. Or, maybe they were somewhere in-between.
For myself, I found this episode frustrating because the plot structure is odd. If you remove all of the Mando’s trip to see Grogu from the episode, and instead have Mando go straight to see Boba Fett on the palace, the episode works flawlessly. But the journey to…let’s it New Jedi World (NJW)…creates an uneven plot structure that does detracts, more than adds, to the main narrative. I can understand why people felt frustrated about the lack of Boba in the episode because, in their defense, he IS the main character. Following the Mando heavy episode 5 it was reasonable for fans to expect Mando and Boba Fett would team up again, but also reasonable to assume the next episode would include Boba Fett again. That he is sidelined for two episodes is really strange.
This isn’t to say that I thought the trip to NJW is bad. In isolation, it is fine. I think it would have been better to save it for The Mandalorian season 3, but it is also not really shocking that Luke and Grogu show up. And personally, I didn’t really care one way or the other that Ahsoka was there. She was sorta irrelevant since she and Luke don’t really have a meaningful conversation beyond the superficial.
I will say, too, that whether intentionally or not, they also showed that Luke is a really really bad teacher. Which sorta makes sense because he is pretty new to his role. I found myself rolling my eyes at Luke here and there because, as someone who has taught and who coaches athletes, he needs some work on his planning and delivery. Also, I’m not sure offering a toddler a lightsaber is the wisest decision, especially when that toddler has been known to do some hilarious, albeit reckless things.
Anywho, that’s my two cents 😎

I enjoy what most people think and say on social media to a point. I used to think it was all superficial and off-the-cuff comments anyone could make with little effort. But I’ve since found that there are some interesting thoughts on everything to do with Star Wars and I enjoy the back and forth banter 🙂 But I get what you mean. I guess I don’t really care what other people think in the sense that it has never affected any of my decisions on what to like in Star Wars. But I like to see what other people think and how differently they think about particular issues or episodes or characters 🙂
I also get what you mean about the whole Jedi part of that episode. Now that I look at it, it does seem a little strange to include it. I agree with you that it probably should have been in The Mandalorian season 3. But I have a very big soft spot for anything to do with Luke Skywalker. So the more I get to see of him, the better 😀
As for Ahsoka, again I never really thought of her as superfluous to the main story but I guess she was. It was kinda weird that she was even there because we didn’t need to see her at all to progress the story?
Regarding Luke as a teacher, I can see why you’d say that about him lol. I also wondered why he made Grogu choose which path he wanted to be follow. I thought that was a little extreme considering Grogu is a child and barely capable of making most decisions for himself. I doubt many adults in the same situation would be able to answer straightaway. But when I thought about it more I realised that Luke has seen first-hand what happens to a person who makes the wrong choices. I think Luke did what he did because he didn’t want Grogu to follow the wrong path and always feel regret bout his decision. I guess it all ties back to Grogu going back to Mando which makes sense in the end 😀
