“I’m here to rescue you!” – Luke Skywalker Animation

I really like this Luke Skywalker quote from Star Wars Episode IV A New Hope and got a cool idea from an article I read in an old Star Wars Insider magazine. I used that original concept and came up with the following edit and animation. I realised after masking the image of Luke Skywalker into my GIF that for some reason, copying from a PDF may have distorted the image so I had to mask it again and “touch up” the image some more before I could use it. Then I created the first GIF and didn’t like the colour because I had used a transparent background layer originally. So I then had to create a new layer with a white background and then created the final animation that I was happy with. I also made an edit because, why not?

Here’s the animation

Darth Maul Edit and Animation

I’ve done a lot of animation using Darth Maul because he’s just so underrated to me as a Star Wars villain. And there is a lot of really good star wars literature out there in the way of comics and books that extend his story far beyond the films. Even animated tv series such as Star Wars The Clone Wars do him a lot more justice than I felt he received in The Phantom Menace. Did you know that the voice used in the Phantom Menace isn’t Ray Park’s, the actor that played him? They had to use a voice over artist because Ray Parks’ voice was too highly pitched to use for Darth Maul Nice little factoid for you!

So I am on a little bit of a Darth Maul trip right now hence all the edits. But this one, I am especially proud of because I played around with Photoshop filters and blending to come up with this and I really like the finished edit:

And a GIF where I was just fooling around with different animations:

Age of Republic – Darth Maul 1 Animation

I made another edit because as you know, I love to create animated edits of art I like in the Star Wars universe and it’s kinda been my thing. But I am not happy with this edit at all. I dunno what it is, I regret posting it now. My problem is I look at something, it can be a painting, a digital image, a poem or just about anything like that and I’ll envision how it would sound or look. Then I try to replicate what I see and sometimes, it doesn’t always come out the way I’d like.

The artist is the amazing Paolo Rivera whom I don’t have enough praise for:

To compensate for this, I went on this really crazy Darth Maul bender and ended up with another two animations, and an image edit which I think came out exactly as I wanted it to. I’ll post it tomorrow along with the other animations I made.

Also, I think I might start writing a little bit more about work again since they blocked my website. 😂It seems there is something unsavoury about the URL darksiderconfessions which I find hilarious!

Textless Jedi Fallen Order poster

I finally completed this poster edit of the cover art for the Art of book Jedi Fallen Order. It was a real study in patience for me, my hand was actually cramping up. But I am pretty happy with the editing I did, I’m slowly getting better at retouching images, even difficult ones like this. One of the reasons why this was so challenging is because the text is actually across the Sith runes on the outer edge of the chamber door so I had to recreate the runes. Clone stamp is your friend!

I think its time I consider investing in a tablet though because using a mouse for this type of job is not really working well for me.

Here’s the smaller version of the file I did for Tumblr. Do you think it would look good animated? I’m thinking I might have my new animation project 😊

Star Wars is Poetry, the controversial Rise of Skywalker “leaks” and the Art of Jedi Fallen Order poster releases!

Well! What a week it has been for Star Wars fans! I can’t even begin to describe the exciting week I’ve had, but I’m willing to bet a lot of Star Wars fans are feeling perhaps a little lost right now. Indeed, the Reylo fans will be feeling more than a bit annoyed after the latest The Rise of Skywalker leaks were released on Reddit. The internet is honestly blowing up as a result of these leaks. If you have yet to read them or you’re avoiding spoilers, don’t worry, I won’t be talking about them here. But if you’re interested in my point of view, I did write an article over at The Dork Side of the Force about the whole thing so feel free to read my work there.

I’ve made a few edits during my time off, another update for Star Wars is Poetry on Instagram:

And via Milner’s blog – the latest poster for the Art of the Jedi Fallen Order has hit the internet:

I’m currently trying to work my way through a textless edit of this poster but it’s proving to be much more challenging than anticipated. I’m continuing to chip away at it and I’ll post it here when it’s completed.

Rey The Last Jedi – Flowers Double Exposure Photoshop Tutorial

I spent some time trying to find a tutorial to create a flower portrait. You’ve probably seen these images around on the internet, particularly on Instagram where it looks like the person’s face is either sprouting flowers or has flowers covering the edges of the face and head. I’ve wanted to create one of these flower portraits for a while now but couldn’t find a tutorial online that had all the assets to create one. I finally found one via Emir Hujdur’s YouTube channel and decided I’d give it a go.

Here’s the completed image:

REYFLOWERPORTRAIT01

I managed to find an image of Rey I wanted to use taken from The Last Jedi (obviously not a stock image). I edited the image by removing Luke (sorry Luke!) to single out Rey.

And used this stock image for the flowers:

Comment: This tutorial is not one that I would recommend, particularly for anyone that’s a beginner looking for easy tutorials to lean in Photoshop. The reason for this is the tutor is moving extremely fast through the creation of this image, If you don’t know your way around the Photoshop interface, you’ll probably struggle with this tutorial. I had to double back on some of the steps myself so I could replicate the tutor exactly to create the desired outcome. That aside, the tutor does provide links to other tutorials they’ve done, all of the assets used in the tutorial (free) and even a link to the music they used.

Luke Skywalker Heir to the Jedi Cover Art Animation

I’ve been home for the last couple of days, so I’ve had some time to sit down and actually make some quality edits. On Pinterest, I seem to be growing a lot more steadily than expected with both followers and views on my content. So I am quite happy about that. I’ve also noticed that my video content seems to be getting more interest than GIFs do (GIFs are trendy on Tumblr and Imgur but not as prevalent on Pinterest in my experience) so I’ve been creating .mp4 files instead of GIFs for my posts there. One of the posters I animated has had about 54 thousand views (which is a lot for me), so I plan to keep making these as people seem to enjoy them 🙂

Here’s another edit I did use colour grading in Photoshop and then animating it. The original art is by Larry Rostant. Isn’t this art magnificent? There are three versions of this image too, all of them with Luke in a different pose (so I can animate those at a later date):

So the above image is not the same as the edit I did below where I made a lot of colour grading changes, and I intensified the light source from behind Luke as you can see here:
