Star Wars Cinematic Universe – Did Rey Become a Jedi Master?

At the end of Star Wars, The Rise of Skywalker, Rey is seen with her new lightsaber. She can also see both Luke and Leia as force ghosts.

I came across this post online as I was reading through updates on WordPress, and this triggered me a little (not gonna lie, probably more than a little) 😅

Following the Battle of Exegol in 35 ABY, Rey took up the family name of her mentors Luke and Leia Skywalker. Now the last Jedi, Rey Skywalker ascended to the rank of Master.

The thing is, anybody can post a blog article and rant about what they think is happening in the Star Wars universe, but that doesn’t make any of it fact or canon, for that matter. However, there are many debates over what is and isn’t canon, so I try to stay away from all that. But this post got me thinking – are there fans out there that actually think Rey is a Jedi Master?

Was Rey even “The Last Jedi?” Technically, yes, Rey was the last Jedi because when Ben Solo became Ben Solo again, he had reverted back to being a Jedi but then died by sacrificing himself to save Rey. So at that point, Rey was the very last Jedi that we know of in the cinematic universe. I’d go so far as to say that she was probably the last Jedi we know of in canon as well. But a Jedi Master?

Let’s see what the sources online have to say about Rey’s status as a Jedi Master.

Taken from the Wookiepedia resource on Rey:

At some point after, while attempting to restore galactic peace, Rey became a Jedi Master.[52]

This is listed in The Star Wars Book by Pablo Hidalgo (referred to in the Wookiepedia article). According to this reference, Rey became a Jedi Master. But is that canon?

If it is, I don’t agree with it for a couple of reasons. First, to become a Jedi Master, you have to take on a Padawan. If there were no other remnants of the Jedi Order (seeing as Rey was the last Jedi), how did this happen? Did Rey just take the title herself? And we won’t even talk about the Jedi High Council in this debate.

Secondly – Anakin Skywalker considered one of the strongest Jedi of all time, never made it to Jedi Master. How could Rey do something that Anakin couldn’t, given their age and years of experience? Anakin was trained from a very early age. Rey only discovered the force when she was in her late teens. None of that makes any sense.

To be honest, all of those so-called “sources” online are edited by people, just normal Star Wars fans like you and me. It is the same with Wikipedia (so many people, including myself, seem to forget it’s not really a legitimate source of information in that regard). That’s not to say that I am not grateful because I am. It takes a lot of effort and time to maintain a database of that size, and the fandom would be less of a fandom without it.

It is important to note that this post has absolutely nothing to do with Rey not being as powerful as other Jedi or any of that garbage because she’s a woman. Frankly, anyone that thinks that or even entertains that garbage can just go right along and unfollow me because that is misogynistic and has no place here or anywhere, to be honest. Just wanted to make that clear, now moving on.

I couldn’t find a reliable source that confirms The Star Was Book as canon, and several sources online debate it, so I’m going to say no at this point until proven otherwise (Wookiepedia says it is but again, refer to my details above about Wookiepedia as a source).

It is possible that Rey did other things not shown in the cinematic universe, such as founding the new Jedi Order (again, nothing confirms this online). I can imagine many fans would not be happy about that, considering Luke tried to do this in the Legends books, which isn’t considered canon according to Wookiepedia.

I know that Pablo Hidalgo is part of the Lucas Film Story Group, and therefore whatever he writes is considered canon. But I’m still not convinced.

What do you think about Rey being a Jedi Master? Agree or disagree? Why or why not? Let me know in the comments, friends!

Rey Retro Style Star Wars Edit

I felt like doing something this weekend that took some time to complete but I finally managed to finish it off. Here is the edit of Rey I made with retro style effects:

And one with a different colouring:

I also made a quick animation because I loved the retro style so much:

Star Wars Cinematic Universe – Rey Changing Her Lineage

You can get many wonderful tidbits of BTS knowledge on Twitter if you follow the right accounts. The official star wars Twitter often has nice gems of information like this one about Rey that I didn’t know:

So Rey “decides” that the Jedi are her ancestors. Hmm, okay well I don’t really have a problem with that because given her situation, would you really want to be related to Darth Sidious? Of course not unless you were also as deluded, jaded and evil as he was. I’m certain that given a chance, Rey would have jumped at the opportunity to be anyone else other than a relative of the most hated villain in Star Wars cinematic history.

In that sense, I am okay with knowing this even if it wasn’t in the film. I’m sure something as important as this has been plaguing Rey since The Force Awakens. And with the story changing so much over the course of these films, it doesn’t at all surprise me that Chris Terrio was aiming for Rey to become one with the Jedi.

I kind of like that idea to be honest. And I didn’t like it at first. When I saw the ending for The Rise of Skywalker, I was a little miffed about it but not just because of how Rey was written in the final film but for a series of things throughout the trilogy.

What I didn’t like was how the fandom started picking on Rey because she was a woman who was stronger or at least as strong as her enemy. That didn’t sit well with some. And to that, I just laugh. How they can make her sex an issue in a Star Wars movie is beyond me. I mean one of the strongest characters in the entire saga is a woman – Princess Leia. She is the bastion of strength in the original trilogy and in many ways is stronger than Luke, particularly at the beginning in A New Hope when Luke is very much finding his way in the force.

Yeah, too many open wounds on that side of things to talk about calmly in this fandom. But I think I like that Rey had somewhere special to belong and you just know that the Jedi would have opened their arms and hearts to her – no questions asked.

Rey represents all that is good in the universe within the sequel trilogy, and for that, she deserves to be recognised as a Jedi. This is exactly the same way Luke was considered the hero of the OT and for the same reason. He was the hope of the galaxy (well, some could debate him and Leia were) and his heart was pure and good. It’s not even complicated when you think of it that way.

What do you say, readers? Do you agree or disagree with my comments? Do you disagree with Chris Terrio’s path for Rey in his script? Let me know in the comments!

Star Wars Line and Silhouette Art – Rey

Yesterday I made a quick note saying that I had to spend some time creating my companion piece for this Kylo Ren art. I did spend an hour or so going over something I had put together with unexpected results. As I was unable to completely duplicate what I had created with the original Kylo Ren image, I pretty much did what I always do in Photoshop and that is go with the flow!

I came up with these two images and it’s not that often that I like what I create because I am such a fussy person when it comes to stuff I make. But I actually liked these two images:

Using a similar process to the Kylo Ren art, I created this image first:

And then I played around a little more and came up with this one which is using a silhouette rather than the “line art” effect:

Blue will forever be Rey’s colour plus I think it suits her because it’s the colour of the Resistance!

I spent time looking for the original tutorial that I partially used to create the line art effect and I couldn’t find it – even in my browser history for some reason it had disappeared! So, I tried looking for a photoshop action to replicate the effect. I managed to find a free one but when I used it, I didn’t like the result at all so I ditched it and just made my own.

You can create these image effects in photoshop with photoshop actions. Actions are good for a few reasons; one is if you’re not that proficient with Photoshop, you can use actions to create the same effects (which is cool). Or, if you’re really stuck for time and need something done fast, photoshop actions are brilliant for saving time. But as I have found over the years, not all photoshop actions will turn out the way you expect and in that situation, it pays to just do your own thing.

So if anyone wants to know how I made these images, feel free to drop me a line and I will do my best to help you out. Or if you’re keen to check out the photoshop action I downloaded for free, you can do that right here. See if you like the end result and do let me know if you use it in any of your own art as I’d be keen to feature it on this blog!

The Dark Side – Rey (Sequel Trilogy)

“It was her. Her face, her form. Cold and dark, wearing a Sith cloak, whole at last. Horrified, she watched as the dark mirror Rey swung her blades apart, forming a long, fiery quarterstaff. It was the very saber she’d tentatively begun designing in her mind. This couldn’t be real. It was a vision, nothing more. But the dark Rey’s steps echoed when they met the floor, and her lightstaff reeked of ozone. Her power was incredible, intoxicating.”

Dark Side Rey was interesting to me. She had something to her that her light side counterpart didn’t. Even though we have seen Rey losing composure before and this happened mostly when she was fighting Kylo Ren, perhaps that isn’t what was really happening.

As one, Kylo Ren and Rey were the Dyad – a force as strong as life itself. This means the force is in balance; Kylo Ren representing the dark side and Rey the light. But what if it wasn’t Kylo Ren that Rey was fighting? Since they are actually considered two sides of the same “coin”, this would mean that Rey wasn’t really fighting Kylo Ren but fighting herself. And this was also true for Kylo Ren.

Imagine if Dark Side Rey had won? All those moments that Rey spent trying to resist Kylo Ren and the dark side could have been spent ruling the galaxy alongside Kylo Ren as the Supreme Leader. We would have had a very different movie and one that would be almost too appealing to deny. Almost but not quite.

As we all know, this is a Disney IP. Everything must end in rainbows and light. We can’t pretend we don’t know how this story goes, it’s the same for almost every single film we see. Test audiences just don’t respond well when a film ends on a downer. And that equates to money that won’t be made if the film is released.

And that’s annoying because sometimes you want things to go bad. Sometimes you want to see the other side, the dark side winning even for just a little while. How can everything be balanced when the powers that be are always pushing for the light side to win?

So for that reason alone, I was thrilled to actually see Dark Side Rey in The Rise of Skywalker – and so was most of the Star Wars fandom, at least it seemed like that on Tumblr.

As a character, I think Dark Side Rey should have had more time to evolve on the screen. She was just so much more interesting to me. Did you feel this way about Dark Side Rey in The Rise of Skywalker? Or did you think that Dark Side Rey was a waste of resources and time and shouldn’t have been featured at all?
