Have you ever wondered why R2-D2 never listens to Luke Skywalker when he tells him to “stay with the ship?” There could be a reason for that depending on what you believe, of course.

In Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1980), Luke tells R2 to “stay with the ship” on numerous occasions, and the little droid just doesn’t listen. That could be because the last person to ever say that to him before Luke Skywalker was Anakin, his Father. And when Anakin tells R2 to stay with the ship, he obeyed him, and he never saw his master again.

Padme wasn’t the only one who got her heart broken on Mustafar… but droids don’t have hearts to break, do they? I wonder…

It makes it even more heartbreaking when you know that George Lucas planned for everything in the original Star Wars film to be seen through the eyes of the droids R2-D2 and C3-PO. Lucas was inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s The Hidden Fortress, which is told by two peasants who are constantly bickering with each other.

It is a droid’s plight to be at the beck and call of its master. But R2-D2 was no ordinary droid, and both Anakin and Luke adored him. The bond they formed with him was genuine, at least it felt that way to me. So it makes perfect sense that Star Wars could be told through their eyes. To me, they were as “human” in particular moments as their masters and counterparts.
