There’s yet another huge rumour currently doing the rounds on social media about a big POSSIBLE contender for the role of Thrawn in the Star Wars cinematic universe.
I discussed this a while back in this post, and this very well-known Avenger’s actor was not mentioned then. But this rumour is now getting traction online, so I wanted to discuss it with my friends.
What would you say if RDJ was considered for the role of Thrawn? I know some people love him and others not so much (yes, I have friends that really don’t like Robert Downey Jr. as a person or an actor lol!) but he’s a talent not to be ignored. He has been very successful as Tony Stark AKA Iron Man. And his popularity in that role, and within the Marvel franchise is worth a lot of cash in the movie business. He’s a very bankable name much like Michael Fassbender.
He’s got the star power to catapult the character of Thrawn to great heights, he can act (although I wouldn’t refer to his role as Tony Stark the best example of this), and I think he has the right type of attitude for the character of Thrawn. There are similarities between Tony Stark and Thrawn in that they are both intellectuals capable of influencing a losing battle into a win. They are strategic thinkers and masterful manipulators (don’t think Tony Stark did much manipulating in his role? Just look at how he influenced Peter Parker).
I think there could be some support in the franchise for Robert Downey Jr., and we know that social media is a great tool for anyone wanting to voice their opinion and make it matter. RDJ supporters may very well be the ones who do. Of course, this is only pure speculation – and I will always advise otherwise in my posts. But this is a Star Wars blog, and this is where I love to speculate!
**RUMOUR UPDATE**
According to several different sources, RDJ has been in talks with Favreau about a Star Wars project that isn’t Thrawn! Again, treat this as pure speculation until it’s officially announced by Lucasfilm or Disney.
Here’s the tweet:
Let me know in the comments what your thoughts are as I am excited to discuss this with my readers and fellow Star Wars fans!
Stay safe out there, keep creating and I’ll catch you tomorrow!
I have to say no. I just don’t see him as Thrawn at all. He’s great in other roles, but it for me, it’s just not a good fit. I’m more of a Fassbender or Cumberbatch fan for Thrawn.

Hi ya 🙂 Yeah, I’m actually not sure myself of who would be best as Thrawn – still deciding. I like RDJ and there’s no doubt about his talent but hmm food for thought for sure 🙂

Yeah, I just see more of a Thrawn-like seriousness in the other two, whereas there’s a kind of goofiness to RDJ that would not fit at all, lol.

It’ll be cool to see him in Star Wars in any capacity, that’s for sure.

Hi Julie, I think I have mentioned it before here (or on Tina’s blog) that I reckon Christopher Meloni who starred as Det Elliot Stabler in “Law & Order – Special Victims Unit” would make a great Thrawn. He has great presence (I felt it through the Force 😀 ) and has fantastic acting ability and range. He may not be a top flight A-Lister (no disrespect to Chris) like Robert Downey but that would help as he wouldn’t have the pressure to reproduce a “Tony Stark” performance, he could come in fresh. Anyhoo, it may not be as polished as one of your edits Julie, but I did a quick rough edit of a picture of Chris to show you how he looks as Thrawn. (Oh and did I say that Meloni can be…INTENSE?)

Yeah I know this actor, I’ve seen him before but I can’t remember in what (as I watch A LOT of stuff lol). I think if he lost a bit of weight (if I remember correctly, this guy has always had a very good physique but perhaps a little too big for Thrawn) he’d look pretty good as Thrawn 🙂 I like this edit 😀

Hi there, the edit is really rough to be honest, I’m normally much neater with my masking but I just wanted to get the pic done so I could include it with my comment (I lost the original image I did when my laptop crashed). Plus I don’t think Thrawn wears a Tuxedo.

As much as I like RDJ, I have to agree with whomever suggested Benedict Cumberbatch, who would do a tremendous job in the role. A little left-field maybe, and this actor may be too old and portly these days, but James Spader’s voice seems perfect for the role.

Hi there, welcome to Darkside Creative 🙂 And thank you for taking the time to reply! Yes, I can’t get my head around RDJ being Thrawn. But I can certainly see Benedict Cumberbatch for sure 🙂 And maybe even Mads Mikklesen as well because he was so great in Hannibal 🙂
