Star Wars Celebration Cancelled – Not Returning Until 2022

Announced yesterday across multiple social media channels, Star Wars Celebration 2020 has been officially cancelled. While it’s not exactly surprising, it’s still disappointing. Even though I wasn’t planning to go this year, their online digital access would have been fantastic for someone living in New Zealand.

Star Wars Celebration released this press release yesterday:

To our Star Wars Celebration fans and friends,

At Star Wars Celebration, the health and safety of our fans, attendees, exhibitors, guests and staff is always our number one priority. Due to the global impact of the COVID-19 virus and in speaking with local and state authorities on the latest public health guidelines related to indoor conventions, we have made the decision to cancel Star Wars Celebration for 2020.

At the end of the day, safety is paramount regardless of fandoms, fans or anything else which is totally understandable. And with the US still having problems containing the COVID-19 virus, I realise my country’s situation is an exception having had no new cases for 17 days straight until two visitors from the U.K arrived a couple of days ago.

They announced that D23 will go ahead as planned next year but really when you think about it, there won’t be a whole lot of Star Wars to see. 2022 makes a lot more sense. With fingers-crossed, we are expecting to hear about Disney’s plans for their new Star Wars movie, and hopefully, we’ll get content from the new Obi-Wan Kenobi TV series that is set to release.
